Performing Arts At The Academy

Woodwind Ensemble

Do you fancy learning to play the Clarinet or Saxophone? A new Woodwind Ensemble is taking place on Thursday lunchtimes in room 22, 12.30pm-12.55pm.

All are welcome – it is always much more fun to perform in ensembles than on your own!

Please contact Mrs Thackwray if you are interested in attending.

Wilds Lodge Festival 2017

Students from the Performing Arts and Music Departments at Stamford Welland Academy participated in this year’s Wilds Lodge Festival.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of performing in a different location and listening to other performers of all ages and abilities.

The atmosphere from audience and organisers was wonderfully welcoming and supportive. Our students were complemented on their performances by a number of audience members, young and old.

It was an absolute pleasure to take our talented students and for us to participate in this event. Students have already asked if we can go again next year!

Song Writing at the Academy

Our students really enjoyed the opportunity to learn how to write songs with Richard Cottell – take a look at their progress in the videos below!

Strings at SWA

Year 7 and 8 music groups have enjoyed a presentation from Mrs Summers – our very own Violin teacher. Mrs Summers will be joining us in September to teach up and coming musicians willing to put the extra effort into learning an instrument.

Year 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to have a go on the Violin.

If anyone is interested in learning to play Violin, please contact Mrs Thackwray.

Congratulations Mrs Thackwray!

We are proud to announce that the British Association of Barbershop Singers have approved funding for Mrs Thackwray’s registration and accommodation fees to attend the Directing Course at Harmony College in Nottingham during the Summer Holidays. Mrs Thackwray is excited to attend this directing course to further develop her directing skills with an aim to further develop vocal groups within SWA. Starting with Stamford Welland Academy’s very own Barbershop Choir in September.

Welcome and Thank you!

We would like to welcome and issue a huge thank you to Mr Jeremy Jepson, who has very kindly offered to support SWA Choir in it’s next journey to success. Jeremy is a freelance musician based in Stamford, Lincolnshire working throughout the East Midlands, Cambridgeshire and further afield. His portfolio includes solo and ensemble performances as a countertenor, solo and accompanying roles as an organist and pianist and directing and trining choirs across a wide range of ages in liturgical and concert performances. He also teacher, gives singing and choral workshops and composes and arranges choral music.

Congratulations Aiden McKenzie

Congratulations to Aiden McKenzie who took his first ever Piano examination on 20th March. Aiden has been learning to play the piano with Mrs Thackwray for the last 12 months. He took on the challenge to be entered for the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music Grade II Piano exam. Aiden has worked tirelessly to develop his pieces to a high standard, learn to play and memorise all manner of scales, learned to develop his aural skills, sight reading and musicality through performance. Stamford Welland Academy’s Music Department are extremely proud to say that Aiden received his certificate with a pass in Grade 2 Piano from ABRSM. Well done Aiden! Now let’s aim for Grade 3.

The Music Department would like to welcome a new member to it’s team of peripatetic teachers. The excellent singing teacher Shiona Cormack is joining the Music team at SWA. We currently have 4 students who are excited to start receiving singing lessons with Mrs Cormack this term. If you are keen for your son/daughter to develop their singing skills and would like to receive lessons with Mrs Cormack, please contact Mrs Thackwray for further details.

Well done Aiden McKenzie!

Aiden McKenzie (Year 10) has been learning to play the piano with Mrs Thackwray for just under a year. Today he took his Grade II Piano Exam with Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music. We are very proud of his progress in such a short period of time, all due to his strong commitment to practise. Well done Aiden!

Well done Xander Cooke!

Xander Cooke (Year 8), participated in the Peterborough Music Festival last week. He performed two piano pieces by Baroque composer Bach and Romantic composer Schumann. Bach was performed note perfect, with great dialogue between hands, complemented by the adjudicator. While playing Schumann Xander expressed musicality through performance. We are very proud of Xander, to have been commended for his great playing by the adjudicators. He should also be proud of his commitment to developing his musical talent and experiences by participating in the Music Festival. Well done Xander!

Bluecoat Primary Visit

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Year 2 students from Bluecoat’s Primary School. Ms Giddings’ class have been learning about the castles and banquets of Medieval times. We really enjoyed listening to their beautiful singing of a medieval style song, with accompanying rhythm and drone from this lovely group of year 2 students.

Today 7.1 were sad to end their rotation of Brass lessons with Mr Taylor. Here is a lovely picture which represents the fun and enjoyment gained by this group. Mr Taylor and Mrs Thackwray look forward to introducing 7.2 to these lessons next week.

Song writing Competition 2017!

Mrs Thackwray and Mr Fox would like to encourage all of our students to participate in this competition. Please see Mrs Thackwray if you would like to take part. A great challenge! Why not have a go?!

Dance Performance – 26/01/2017

Mr Fox, our fabulous Dance and Drama specialist, prepared our students and delivered a wonderful performance to our friends at Priory Care Home, in celebration of Burns Night. Our Year 9 Dancers, choreographed a Scottish themed dance. Some of the residents were rather emotive watching our fabulous Dance students perform.

MashUp – Spring term 2017

During this term, 7.1 have been learning to play brass instruments during one of their Music weekly lessons. They have made excellent progress and now can not only “Buzz”, but they can also play 5 notes on their chosen instrument. Here is a recording of one of the pieces our year 7 students learnt today during their brass lesson. This group of year 7 students will enjoy the fun of one more lesson with Mr Taylor, before the change in rotation. We would like to expand the instrumental lessons available at SWA by offering Brass lessons. If you are interested in your son or daughter continuing or wishing to receive paired brass lessons at SWA with Mr Taylor, please contact Mrs Thackwray for further information.
